A note from our perfumer in Grasse.

On the brief. On disagreement. On the moment Sulu finally smelled right.

A note from our perfumer in Grasse.

When I first received the brief, I almost said no. The founder wanted me to compose against neuro-emotional outcomes — focus, calm, confidence — not against marketing copy or seasonal trend reports. I'm used to those. I had to think about what calm actually smells like before it smells like anything.

Sulu took five rounds. The first three were too soft. The fourth was too floral. The fifth was the one. The clue I'd been missing was that calm isn't the opposite of energy — it's the absence of pressure. So we removed pressure rather than adding softness. The white musk got pulled back. The aldehydes came forward but turned cool. The bottle stayed light.

Calm is what you smell when there's nothing in the formula asking for your attention.Mireille J., round 5

I don't know if we'll work this way forever. But it's the most interesting brief I've worked on in a decade.
